Dear Salam Food,
I appreciated your Tweet of concern for the Ft. Hood soldiers and
families, and believe it quite sincerely. As what most people see as a
“white caucasian Christian”, I know that you probably have had, and will
have animosity against you, and for that I want to apologize.
I was looked down upon because I was raised poor, then lauded because of
two earned doctorates, but I was the same person all along. I will pray that
you have peace according to what you hold in your heart, and that you will
remain safe, and prosperous in these times.
My family roots are from three tribes of American Indians, which were
despised, and my great, great grandmother walked the Trail of Tears as a
child (from Northern Alabama tribe of the Chickasaw Nation) to Oklahoma
(Indian Territory), and was sold to a descendent of German
immigrants (Schaeffer), but he was a third generation American. They were
happy together, but my great grandfather and family were persecuted because
of being Indian Half-Breeds, also known as “Breeds”. Then WW-I and WW-II
came, and they were persecuted for being “German Foreigners”, yet the Indian
blood had been in America for thousands of years, and the German (Schaeffer)
side had been here for over a century. My great, great Grandfather changed
the whole family’s name to “Shafer” to appear more American. One of his
sons, my great grandfather, married an Irish woman in the late 1800’s, when
many stores had signs that said, “No Irish Allowed”, or, “Irish Need Not
Apply for Job”. My grandfather was thence an Indian/German/Irish mix, all
abused by prejudice.
The other side of my family was Irish on my my maternal grandfather’s
side, and his grandfather had changed his name from the Irish “O’Nowlin”
because of the persecution to the more English-sounding “Nowlin”. But his
maternal grandparents were a Dutch slave trader who raped a Black Slave (the
child was known as a “Black Dutch”), and the dark complexion and curly hair
of my maternal great grandfather, whose father was Irish, left him of Dutch
Slaver/Raped Negro Slave/Irish descent and they were persecuted heavily, but
it eased when he changed the family name. My grandfather is very dark
complected and has quite wavy and curly hair at age 95. He became a judge.
My wife’s family on both paternal sides were German immigrants that came
over to America in the mid and late 1800’s. They settled in a community of
Germans, and faced the WW-I and II prejudice together. My wife’s mother was
a bastard child, whose father was an Irishman who moved to Utah to work on
the Transcontinental Rail Road, and several generations of family stayed
there as rail road workers. They were despised because they were Irish, and
heavily so by the Mormons who considered them to be “from the devil” and
living in “Mormon Country”. (They arrived before Utah was a state, and was
just a Territory.) My mother-in-law, whose mother got pregnant while being a
nurse for an Irishman (he was hurt and nursed in Wyoming, and the baby
conceived there, while his wife was home in Utah). She was half Indian
(Sioux Nation) and half French-Canadian, so she was stigmatized for her
Irish/French/Canadian ancestry and having a bastard child born from an
married Irishman in Utah (people in Wyoming presumed he was Mormon, so she
was also looked down upon for that, although he was “Christian”, but in name
only)
My children have had ancestry, spanning over the past 200 years, that
included Native American Indians (from both paternal and maternal sides) of
Chickasawa, Cherokee, Comanche, Sioux and Blackfoot tribes; a Dutch slave
trader; a black slave who was raped and bore a half-breed bastard chld,
Irish ancestors on both sides (who on the paternal side had to change their
name spelling to earn a small amount of acceptance), “Christians” persecuted
by the dominant Mormons in Utah (Mormons called them unclean Gentiles),
Germans on both sides (and on the paternal side the Germans had to change
their name spelling to show patriotism to America in the wars against the
Germans during both World Wars), and then both paternal sides bore great
stigmatism for their poverty as “sand farmers in West Texas). My Grandfather
Shafer had polio as a child, and was ignored for 5 years during his
childhood, so he never learned to converse well, and when he recovered from
the Polio, he was left with a small, short leg that left him with a severe
limp. He was mocked, the horse he rode to a country school was frequently
loosed or stolen so he had to limp home, and because of his physical
handicap, he was presumed to be “mentally retarded”, which he was not. His
mother died while he had polio, and his step-mother neglected and abused
him, and allowed his half-siblings (his father had children from three
wives, and he was of the second wife) older and younger to mock him and push
him down.
I presume from your name and you website that you are Muslim, Pakistani or
Indian, or both. I am sure that you have suffered persecution here, and that
your family was persecuted before you, whether here or in their homeland. It
is a human character defect, and many have learned to use it as a tool of
great evil. While caused by fear, it is covered by religion, but no true
religion (Christian, Islam, Jewish, Buddhist, or whatever) teaches murder or
such evil as occurred in Iraq under President Hussein, in America when my
Native American Ancestors were driven to essentially prison territories
(later called Reservations), or when Northern Americans raped, killed and
burned the women and children, old and infirmed at the end of the Civil War
(my family were all in the South, but not slave owners, (except for one who
took in old slaves too old to work and were left on the road to starve to
death like abandoned dogs, and he took them in as their “owner”, when he was
actually their protector; allowing them to sleep in his own house, and they
helped with sewing, cooking, sweeping, or whatever they could do, if
anything, while he fed, clothed and sheltered them, got them medical
attention if needed and buried them in the family cemetery when they died).
Three of my four great-grandfathers fought in the Civil War (as Rebel
Southerners, opposing government regulation put upon the South and not the
North), and their houses, barns and fields were burned to the ground AFTER
the war was over. They had wives and children raped and murdered by Yankees
AFTER the war, and were then not allowed to vote for their own sheriff,
local officials, state officials or federal representatives for over 5
years. What was not destroyed, was taken in taxes by the Carpet Baggers, and
that is what prompted most of them to move to Texas, where all of my
relatives for 4 generations since that War of Northern Agression (aka, The
Civil War) have tried to live in peace, but we still had to have names
changed, were despised because of a malformed leg from Polio, and primarily
because we were poor, or had so much Native Amerian Blood in those two
generations ago.
We have worked hard, stayed away from the behaviors which brought reproach
and abuse upon the Irish, worship peacefully and never use our religion to
support discrimination or the treating of others badly, and to follow a
clean life, even to the point of changing our names to show we were,
and are, DEDICATED AMERICANS, and to conform to broader cultural standards
as far as our consciences would allow.
Whatever your background, if you are suffering persecution, show love and
patriotism to this country (even though I hate what our government is doing
now), worship God in love, treat all you meet with love and kindness, and
do not isolate yourself with your only friends being those within your
racial or religious group. We must all be Americans, or we will be like
unfed lions caged together: sooner or later, someone is going to get
eaten-up.
Salam. Go in Peace.
